The Six Bridges Cruise

The Six Bridges Cruise

A 50-minute loop up and down the Douro from Ribeira, passing under all six of Porto’s bridges: Infante, Luís I, Maria Pia, São João, Freixo, and Arrábida. The classic boat-tour introduction to Porto’s waterfront.

Operates daily, roughly every 30 minutes in peak season. €15-18 per adult, €7-10 children. No booking needed in low season; book a day ahead in July-August.

Several operators run identical routes: Douroazul, Rota do Douro, Cruzeiros Douro, and smaller independents. Quality is similar across all.

Full-Day Douro Valley Cruises

Full-day cruises leave from Ribeira at 7-8am and return 6-8pm. The route runs up the river to Peso da Régua or Pinhão, with lunch, wine tasting, and a train back.

Full-Day Douro Valley Cruises
Full-Day Douro Valley Cruises

Expect €75-100 for a basic full-day cruise (lunch, wine, train back). €120-150 for premium operators with smaller boats, better food, and guided commentary.

This is a long day but genuinely memorable — the Douro valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site and arguably the most beautiful Portuguese landscape. Book 2-3 weeks ahead in peak season.

A Note from Susan

“One boat tour is essential during any Porto visit. The Six Bridges cruise is the standard first option. If you have a day to spare, the full-day Douro Valley cruise is worth the investment — it’s the classic Portuguese day out.”

— Susan, Founder of Espais Roca

Sunset Cruises

90-minute evening cruises in summer (May-September) with a glass of port included. €25-35. Depart 7-8pm. Beautiful pink and gold light on the Ribeira houses from the water.

If you’re not doing a full day cruise, a sunset cruise is the next best upgrade on the standard Six Bridges tour.

Rabelo Boats vs Modern Boats

Rabelo boats are the traditional wooden port wine boats — broad-bottomed, single-sailed. Many tour operators use replica rabelos for the Six Bridges cruise. Character and atmosphere win over modern comfort.

Modern boats are larger, have onboard toilets, and offer indoor seating if the weather turns. Good for families with small children or anyone sensitive to sun.

Main Operators

Douroazul is the largest and runs the most frequent Six Bridges service. Reliable, English commentary, kiosk on Cais da Ribeira.

Rota do Douro is the premium operator with smaller boats and more attentive service. Slightly more expensive.

Cruzeiros Douro does a good balance of price and quality, with rabelo-style boats.

Specialised wine-focused cruises are offered by Quinta do Noval and a few others — good for port enthusiasts.

Booking and Practicalities

Book online through the operators, at the Cais da Ribeira kiosks, or through Porto tourism offices. Weekend mornings in peak season sell out.

Wear sunscreen — the river is open and there is no shade on most boats. Summer afternoons get hot.

Wheelchair access varies by boat. Confirm when booking if needed.

From Villa Almada

Cais da Ribeira is a 15-20 minute walk downhill from Villa Almada. Uber back uphill afterwards if you’ve been drinking or tired.

Choosing the Right Cruise: 6 Bridges vs Régua vs Pinhão

The Douro’s three flagship cruises cover very different experiences, and the price difference reflects it. The 6 Bridges cruise is the shortest at 50-55 minutes, looping from Ribeira past Dom Luís I, Infante, Maria Pia, São João, Arrábida, and the Freixo bridge. In 2026 prices sit at 16-20 EUR adult, 8 EUR children, and most operators now include a small glass of port or a Douro white.

The Régua day trip runs 100 km upstream, typically departing Porto at 08:00 and returning by 19:00 (boat one way, train the other). Expect 75-95 EUR including a three-course lunch on board, one port tasting, and a visit through the Carrapatelo lock — at 35 metres, one of Europe’s deepest. The Pinhão trip is longer and, to many travellers, more rewarding: 11-12 hours, 105-135 EUR, with two locks and the terraced vineyard amphitheatre around Pinhão station (worth the fare alone for the 1937 Bordallo Pinheiro tile panels).

Seasonality matters more than most guides admit. May, June, and late September deliver the best balance of weather, light, and lower crowds. July-August can top 38 degrees on deck with limited shade — request an upper-deck awning boat. Harvest cruises in mid-September to mid-October sell out 6-8 weeks ahead and carry a 15-25 percent premium.

The main operators are Douro Azul (largest fleet, English commentary, reliable), Manos do Douro (smaller boats, more personal), CaleMar, Tomaz do Douro, and Rota do Douro. Douro Azul now runs solar-hybrid vessels on the Régua route as of March 2026.

Best photo spots: the curve approaching Barqueiros (morning light), the Carrapatelo lock descent, and the Régua riverfront around 16:00. Sit on the right side heading upstream for terraced vineyard views.
