TLDR: The best bakeries in Porto are spread across the central neighbourhoods, with each one famous for one or two specialities. Manteigaria on Rua Alexandre Braga 24 makes the best pastel de nata in the city. Confeitaria do Bolhão on Rua Formosa 339 is the historic classic. My Green Pastry at Praça da República 195 is your organic, vegan, gluten-free option (5 minutes from Villa Almada), and Odete Bakery at Praça do Cel. Pacheco 76 is the vegan coffee favourite. All sit within a 15 minute walk of the villa.

Insider tip from Villa Almada

Walk 4 minutes to Manteigaria at Rua Alexandre Braga 24 around 9.30am, watch them blowtorch the pastel de nata in the open kitchen, and order two with a galão (Portuguese latte). It costs around €3 total, and the nata are still warm with the sugar crackling on top. The exact same nata cost €4 each on the riverside in Ribeira an hour later.

Porto runs on pastel de nata and bread. Every neighbourhood has at least one bakery that serves both, and the locals are particular about which one they go to. Once you find your bakery, you go back every morning of your trip.

I have walked our Villa Almada guests around all the famous Porto bakeries over the years. This is the local list — the ones that are actually amazing, what each one specialises in, and how far each is from the villa front gate. Bring a light appetite. You will be eating a lot.

For pastel de nata: Manteigaria, Confeitaria do Bolhão and Oporto Bakery

Manteigaria at Rua Alexandre Braga 24 is widely ranked the best pastel de nata in Porto. Open kitchen at the back, you can watch the pastry being rolled and the tarts being blowtorched on top. Pastel de nata €1.30, galão €1.60, and a chocolate version that is worth trying once. Open Sunday 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday 8am to 9pm. 4 minutes from Villa Almada.

Confeitaria do Bolhão at Rua Formosa 339, right next to the Mercado do Bolhão, is the historic classic. Around since the early 20th century, it does the full Portuguese pastry range plus traditional breads. Mon-Fri 6am to 8pm, Sat 6am to 7pm, closed Sundays. Pay by card or cash.

Oporto Bakery at Rua do Pinheiro 86 is the late-night option — open Friday and Saturday until 2am. Solid pastel de nata, sandwiches, fresh breads and a different kind of crowd after dark.

Vegan, gluten-free and organic options

My Green Pastry at Praça da República 195 is the standout for organic, vegan and gluten-free pastries. The vegan pastel de nata is the best version of that we have tried in the city. Open until 5pm daily. 5 minutes from Villa Almada.

Odete Bakery at Praça do Cel. Pacheco 76 is the smaller vegan-and-coffee favourite. Cinnamon rolls, oat lattes, dense seeded loaves. Open until 6pm daily. Around 5 minutes from the villa.

Both are family-friendly and have a few outdoor tables. For families with children with allergies, My Green Pastry has the wider range, including dedicated allergen-free batches.

Artisan bread, brunch and the slow-bakery scene

Sourdough, broa de milho and traditional Portuguese loaves. The bread side of Porto is underrated.

Bread & Brunch Bakery at Rua Professor Bento de Jesus Caraça 251 is the artisan sourdough place. Open kitchen, handcrafted pastries, Nespresso coffee, and a brunch menu from 9am. Open daily 7am to 8pm.

Bella Roma at Rua Sampaio Bruno 19 is the Italian-Portuguese fusion option, with breads, pastries and cakes plus outdoor seating. Mon-Sat 7am to 8pm, closed Sundays.

São Jorge Bakery and Pastry at Rua do Dr. Alfredo Magalhães 78 is the workhorse local — custard tarts, artisanal breads, takeaway sandwiches. Open until 8pm daily, around €5-10 per person.

Local favourites and hidden gems

Pastelaria Dom João IV at Rua Dom João IV 291 is the genuine hidden gem on this list. Locals only, slow Saturday mornings, traditional Portuguese sweets and cakes. No website, daylight hours only, and you will probably be the only English voice in the room.

For our Villa Almada guests, the easy starter route is Manteigaria for the morning nata, then My Green Pastry for an afternoon coffee, with Odete or Bread & Brunch as the second-day variant. Confeitaria do Bolhão fits naturally into a Bolhão Market visit.

A useful piece of vocabulary: in Porto, the small custard tart is correctly called pastel de nata (singular) or pastéis de nata (plural). Lisbon’s rival “pastel de Belém” is a brand name from one specific Lisbon bakery. Calling them “Belém tarts” in Porto is a low-grade tourist sin.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best pastel de nata in Porto?

Manteigaria at Rua Alexandre Braga 24 is the consistent local favourite. The pastry is rolled fresh on site, the tarts are blowtorched on top to caramelise the sugar, and a single nata is around €1.30. Confeitaria do Bolhão is the closest historic alternative.

How much does a pastel de nata cost in Porto?

A standard pastel de nata costs €1.20 to €1.40 at most reputable Porto bakeries. Prices in tourist areas like Cais da Ribeira can rise to €2.50 to €4. Stick with the central neighbourhood bakeries for the local price.

Are there vegan or gluten-free bakeries in Porto?

Yes. My Green Pastry at Praça da República 195 specialises in organic, vegan and gluten-free pastries including a strong vegan pastel de nata. Odete Bakery at Praça do Cel. Pacheco 76 is the vegan-and-coffee favourite. Both are around 5 minutes from Villa Almada.

When do Porto bakeries open?

Most Porto bakeries open between 6am and 8am for the breakfast rush. Manteigaria opens at 8am. Traditional bakeries like Confeitaria do Bolhão start at 6am. Most close between 5pm and 8pm. Sundays are mixed — Manteigaria opens, Confeitaria do Bolhão closes.

Should I book a Porto bakery in advance?

No. Porto bakeries are walk-in. The only mild caveat is Manteigaria at the 9am to 10am peak in summer, where the queue can be 10 minutes deep. Either go early at 8.30am or use the takeaway window.
