For UK weekend and short-break travel, Porto is an easier option than Lisbon and considerably cheaper than the Amalfi Coast or Mallorca.

Villa Almada is a 30-minute taxi or Uber from the airport. This guide covers the best flight options, what to pack, and the practicalities of a London-to-Porto trip.

Five London airports fly direct to Porto: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, and City. TAP Portugal and British Airways operate from Heathrow (most frequent, premium). Ryanair flies from Stansted and Luton with the cheapest fares. easyJet from Gatwick and Luton. Jet2 from Stansted.

Flight time 2h30m outbound, 2h45m return (headwinds). Direct — no connections needed.

Best Time to Book

Budget airline tickets are cheapest 6-10 weeks ahead. Last-minute (1-2 weeks) is usually expensive. For summer and Christmas peak, book 3-4 months ahead.

Prices in low season (November-March) start at £30 return on Ryanair. Peak summer around £80-150 return.

Packing for Porto

Summer: light clothing, sun cream, a light layer for evenings, swim kit for Villa Almada’s pool. Winter: warm jacket and an umbrella (Porto has genuine rain October-March).

Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Porto is hilly and paved with cobbles.

Adapter: Portugal uses European two-pin plugs (Type F/C), same as France, Germany, Spain.

A Note from Susan

“Porto has exploded in popularity with British travellers in the last few years, and for good reason — it’s beautiful, good value, and easy to reach. Most of my UK guests arrive Friday evening and leave Monday morning with a genuinely restorative weekend behind them.”

— Susan, Founder of Espais Roca

Money and Card Use

Euros. UK-issued debit and credit cards work everywhere in Porto. Revolut, Wise, Monzo, and Starling give the best exchange rates with no transaction fees — genuinely the most efficient way to spend.

ATMs (Multibanco) are everywhere. Airport currency exchange gives worse rates than ATMs — skip them.

Cash is useful for tascas, small cafes, and the Bolhão market, but not essential for most of the city.

Time Zone and Language

Porto is on Western European Time, 1 hour ahead of London (same as Madrid, Lisbon). Adjust easily.

Portuguese is the language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, less in local tascas and shops. A few phrases — bom dia, obrigado/obrigada, por favor — go a long way.

From Porto Airport to Villa Almada

Metro Line E (purple) from the airport runs to the city centre in 25 minutes, €2.50 with Andante Card. Then a 10-minute walk or short Uber to Villa Almada.

Direct Uber or taxi from the airport is the easiest option with luggage: €15-25 Uber, €25 taxi (fixed tariff), 30 minutes.

Weekend Trip Itinerary

Friday evening: arrive, settle at Villa Almada, dinner at a local tasca.

Saturday: Ribeira walk, lunch at Adega São Nicolau, afternoon in a port cellar in Gaia, evening cocktails at Galerias de Paris.

Sunday: slow morning at Villa Almada pool, brunch, and afternoon at Livraria Lello or Mercado do Bolhão. Early evening flight back to London.

Is Porto Right for a UK Weekend?

For a UK couple or family looking for a short European break, Porto hits the right balance: easy flights, good food and wine, proper city with interesting things to do, safe and walkable, and genuinely good weather from April to October. Better for a weekend than Lisbon (which needs more time) and warmer than most UK summer destinations.

Flight Routes, Pricing Trends 2026, and Connection Strategies

The London-Porto corridor has genuinely improved in the last year. As of spring 2026, four carriers fly direct: TAP Portugal (Heathrow, up to three daily), British Airways (Heathrow, twice daily), easyJet (Gatwick and Luton, combined four to six daily in summer), and Ryanair (Stansted, two to three daily). Wizz Air pulled its Luton route in November 2025, so ignore older blog posts suggesting five low-cost options. Flight time is consistently 2h25 to 2h40 southbound, about 10 minutes longer returning against the jet stream.

Baggage rules tightened in 2026. Ryanair’s free personal item shrank to 40x20x25 cm in January, and easyJet now charges 9.99 GBP for a cabin bag above the small under-seat size. TAP still allows one 8 kg cabin bag free on its Discount fare — often making TAP cheaper in real terms once baggage is added, despite a higher sticker price.

Current price trends: shoulder season (late March, October, early November) returns sit around 85-130 GBP. July-August peaks at 220-320 GBP unless booked by early February. The sweet spot for summer is booking 9-11 weeks out, according to Skyscanner’s 2025 trend data. Tuesday and Wednesday departures consistently run 15-25 percent cheaper than Friday-Sunday.

For the train-plus-ferry alternative: Eurostar to Paris, TGV to Hendaye, overnight to Irún, then Renfe/CP to Porto via Vigo takes roughly 26-30 hours and costs 180-260 GBP — scenic but rarely cheaper than flying. A faster option is Eurostar plus Renfe’s new Paris-Barcelona-Madrid-Porto chain, around 22 hours with one hotel stop, now possible thanks to the Madrid-Porto night train trial that began in December 2025.

If connecting, Lisbon is the smoothest hub with 45-minute minimum connection times on TAP; Madrid via Iberia adds cost without saving time.
