Book Essência do Vinho weekend tickets in early February as soon as they go on sale. The 4-day wine festival at the Palácio da Bolsa attracts 25,000 visitors and Saturday night sells out by mid-month. The Friday afternoon session is calmer and you actually get to talk to the producers — better tasting experience than the busier Saturday evening.
Spring in Porto is the season locals quietly recommend the most. The cruise ships are not yet at peak volume, the temperatures are mild rather than baking, the rain mostly stops by mid-April, and the city’s festival calendar is at its most varied. From wine in February to Primavera Sound in June, there is something amazing happening almost every weekend.
I have lived through 10 spring seasons in Porto now and these are the ones our Villa Almada guests should plan around. Some are headline music festivals, some are quieter local wine and Easter events. All of them are worth knowing about before you book your dates.
February-March: Essência do Vinho and the wine season
Essência do Vinho is the headline wine event of the Portuguese year. It runs from 26 February to 1 March 2026 at the Palácio da Bolsa, with over 300 Portuguese wine producers showcasing their best offerings, expert-led masterclasses, and structured tasting sessions across four days. Day passes around €30, multi-day passes €70 to €100.
For visitors planning a Porto stay around the festival, this is the right call for late February or early March. Pair it with a stay at Villa Almada (4-minute walk to Aliados, 18 minutes to the Bolsa) and a quieter Sunday morning at the Crystal Palace Gardens.
March weather averages 12 to 16°C with regular but short rain showers. Cherry and jacaranda blossom along the riverside from late March. Light layers, a small umbrella, and a bottle of red Vinho Verde for the chillier evenings.

April: Easter ceremonies and the warmer weather
Easter 2026: Good Friday falls on 3 April, Easter Sunday on 5 April. The Porto Easter ceremonies are quieter than the famous ones in Braga (one hour by train), but the Way of the Cross procession on Good Friday from the Sé Cathedral through the old town is genuinely moving.
Most restaurants stay open on Easter Sunday but with reduced hours. Public transport runs a Sunday timetable. The supermarkets close. Plan accordingly.
Late April is one of the loveliest weeks in the city. Daytime 17 to 20°C, lower visitor numbers, the cherry and jacaranda blossom along the river, and the Ribeira terraces start putting tables outside again. For our money, the ten days around 20 April are the single best stretch of the year for a Porto visit.
May: North Music Festival and Festival da Primavera
North Music Festival runs 23-25 May 2026 at the Parque de Serralves. An eclectic mix of international and local music acts in the gardens of the contemporary art museum. Day passes around €40, weekend €100. Set among the formal lawns, the lakes and the contemporary museum building, it is one of the most beautifully sited festivals in Iberia.
The Festival da Primavera (Spring Festival) runs from May into June with outdoor concerts, street performances, dance and theatre, and local markets offering handmade crafts and fresh produce. Most events are free or low-cost and scattered across central Porto squares.
May weather averages 17 to 22°C, with the rain typically tailing off after the first week. The Atlantic stays cool — Matosinhos beach is for sunbathing rather than swimming until June.

June: Primavera Sound and the run-up to São João
Primavera Sound Porto 2026 runs 12-15 June at Parque da Cidade, the 83-hectare urban park that runs to the Atlantic. Eclectic global music acts across multiple genres in an open-air setting. Past line-ups have included Lana Del Rey, Pulp, Vampire Weekend, FKA Twigs, Pet Shop Boys. Day passes from €75, full weekend €175.
For groups travelling for Primavera Sound, Villa Almada is a 25 minute Bolt or 35 minute metro ride to the festival site. The villa’s pool and quieter mornings are a real benefit for recovery between gig nights.
Beyond the festivals, the run-up to São João on the night of 23-24 June starts mid-month, with rajado fish on the streets, plastic hammers appearing in shop windows, and the city slowly building toward Portugal’s most amazing street party.
