Porto Airport to the City Centre: Metro, Taxi and Transfers

Francisco Sá Carneiro sits about 11 km north of Porto. Here is every way into the city, what each one costs and takes, and how to get to Villa Almada’s door on Rua do Almada.

Porto’s airport is one of the easier European arrivals: a single metro line runs from the terminal into the middle of the city, taxis queue directly outside, and nothing takes much more than half an hour. The choice really comes down to how much luggage you have, how many of you are travelling, and what time you land.

If you are staying at Villa Almada, everything below ends at the same place — Rua do Almada, three to five minutes on foot from Trindade metro.

The quick answer

Four realistic ways to cover the 11 km between the terminal and central Porto:

OptionTime to the centreRoughlyBest for
Metro (Line E)~30 min to TrindadeAndante Zone 4 fareCouples, light luggage, budget
Taxi~20–30 minMetered, higher at nightLate arrivals, heavy bags
Uber / Bolt~20–30 minUsually below the metered fareFamilies, fixed price up front
Private transfer~20–30 minBooked in advanceGroups, early flights, door to door

The metro from Porto Airport

Metro Line E — the violet line — starts at the airport and runs straight into the city. The station sits directly beneath the terminal, so you walk out of arrivals, follow the signs down, and you are on the platform in a couple of minutes. No transfer, no shuttle bus.

Trains run through the day at roughly 20–30 minute intervals, with the first departures early morning and the last around midnight. Journey time to Trindade, the main interchange in the centre, is about 30 minutes.

The airport sits in Andante Zone 4, so a single ticket into the centre costs more than a standard city trip. If you plan to use the metro during your stay, the Andante card pays for itself quickly.

Taxis, Uber and Bolt

The taxi rank is immediately outside arrivals and is almost always staffed, even late. Fares are metered, with supplements after hours, at weekends and for luggage. Expect 20 to 30 minutes into the centre depending on traffic — the ring road can be slow at rush hour.

Uber and Bolt both operate at Porto Airport and usually come in a little under the metered taxi fare, with the advantage that you see the price before you accept. Pickup is from the designated ride-hailing area rather than the taxi rank; the app will direct you.

For two people with hand luggage, the metro is the obvious choice. For a family with suitcases and a pushchair, a car is worth the difference — and door to door with a tired toddler at 10pm, it is worth it twice over.

Buses, and what to do about a very late landing

The 601 bus runs from the airport to Cordoaria in the city centre and is the cheapest option of all, but it takes longer than the metro and stops frequently. It is a reasonable choice if you land mid-morning with a single bag and no rush.

Overnight, the 3M night service covers the route when the metro is not running. If you are landing in the small hours, though, a pre-booked transfer or a taxi is the sensible call — night bus timetables are sparse and arriving at an unfamiliar address after a long flight is not the moment to be decoding one.

Getting to Villa Almada

Villa Almada is on Rua do Almada, in the historic centre. Whichever way you come in from the airport, the last stretch is short.

Coming byRouteDoor to door
MetroLine E to Trindade, then a 3–5 minute walk~35–40 min
Taxi or UberDirect to Rua do Almada~25 min
Private transferMet in arrivals, direct to the villa~25 min
Bus 601To Cordoaria, then ~10 minutes on foot or one metro stop~60 min

The walk from Trindade is flat and well lit, which is not something you can say about every route in Porto — the city is built on hills, and plenty of central addresses involve a climb. Rua do Almada does not.
