Sunset at Jardim do Morro

Sunset at Jardim do Morro

The classic. Walk up to the Jardim do Morro on the Gaia side of the Luís I Bridge an hour before sunset. Bring a bottle of Vinho Verde and a picnic from Mercado do Bolhão. The entire Porto skyline glows pink and gold as the sun drops. Free.

Private Port Tasting

Quinta do Noval, Kopke, and Graham’s all offer private tastings for couples — 60-90 minutes with a sommelier, 5-8 ports across the styles, in a quiet corner of a historic cellar. €50-120 per couple.

Private Port Tasting
Private Port Tasting

Particularly good as an afternoon activity before dinner.

Douro Dinner Cruise

2-3 hour evening cruises from Ribeira with dinner served on deck as the sun sets over Porto. Wines included. €70-120 per person depending on menu quality.

One of those classic holiday experiences that earns its reputation — the city genuinely looks different from the water.

Fado Dinner

Casa da Mariquinhas does traditional fado dinner — Portuguese food, wine, and nightly fado performances between courses. €45-55 per person. Intimate, atmospheric, and deeply Portuguese.

Book 1-2 weeks ahead.

A Note from Susan

“Porto works best for couples because it’s romantic without trying. Small streets, unfussed restaurants, gorgeous views from unexpected corners. Pair a classic evening like sunset on the bridge and a fado dinner with a slow morning by the Villa Almada pool and you have a weekend to remember.”

— Susan, Founder of Espais Roca

Romantic Walks

Sunset along the Cais da Ribeira waterfront. Rua das Flores after dark when the independent shops are lit. The Luís I Bridge upper deck at blue hour. These walks are the soul of a Porto weekend.

Villa Almada Pool

A private swimming pool in a south-facing garden. No other guests, no hotel lobby, just you and the view. Combined with a bottle of wine from Mercado do Bolhão and dinner on the terrace, it’s the reason couples choose Villa Almada.

Breakfast in Bed (Literally)

Villa Almada’s daily breakfast can be brought to the villa or served at La Cuisine in the Maison. Coffee, pastéis de nata, fresh orange juice, local cheese and ham, on the terrace with the pool view. Not hotel-breakfast — real food in a proper setting.

Cooking Class for Two

Private cooking classes in a Porto kitchen cover classic Portuguese dishes — francesinha, bacalhau, pastéis de nata. €100-150 per person for a private session. Couples often describe it as the most memorable afternoon of their trip.

Airbnb

“The property was just as described and was very stylish. It was comfortable and spotless. Communication with Susan was easy and fast. She provided lots of recommendations. Peaceful surroundings.”

Day Trip to the Douro

A private driver or small group tour to the Douro Valley — vineyards, wine tasting, lunch at a quinta overlooking the river. €150-300 per person for a full day.

Genuinely romantic — the landscape is one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Beach Afternoon at Foz

A 20-minute metro ride from central Porto, Foz do Douro is where the river meets the Atlantic. Walk the promenade, drinks at a seafront bar, dinner at a seafood restaurant. Classic and quiet.

Why Villa Almada for Couples

Private swimming pool, private terrace, no other guests sharing your space, and the ability to walk into the historic centre in 15 minutes. Daily breakfast and cleaning included means you don’t lift a finger. From €269/night.

Hidden Romantic Spots Locals Use for Anniversaries

Porto locals celebrating anniversaries tend to avoid the obvious tourist stops, and after years of recommendations we’ve built a quiet list of our own. Capela das Almas, the blue-tiled chapel on Rua de Santa Catarina, looks like a postcard all day — but between 17:30 and 18:15 in spring, the western sun hits the façade at an angle that makes the 16,000 azulejo tiles glow almost indigo. Cross the street to the small café opposite and you have the perfect couples’ moment without a single tour group.

Everyone is told to watch the sunset from Jardim do Morro, and it is genuinely beautiful — but it gets packed by 19:00 in April and May. Our quieter alternative is Jardim do Palácio de Cristal, where the peacock-dotted lawns overlook the river from a higher angle. Bring a bottle of vinho verde and claim a bench around the Galeria Almeida Garrett side by 18:45. Praça dos Leões, just below the university, is another underrated spot — beautiful at blue hour with almost no tourists after dark.

For dinner under €60 per couple including wine, we consistently recommend Tapabento (behind São Bento station, book 2 weeks ahead), Flor dos Congregados, or Apego if you want a tasting-menu feel without Michelin pricing. All three hover around €25-28 per person for two courses and a shared bottle.

Douro sunset cruises are worth it only if you time them correctly. In April-May, board the 18:30 departure; in June-August, the 19:30. The magic hour is when the sun drops behind Serra do Pilar monastery and lights the Ribeira façades gold — roughly 30 minutes before official sunset. Book the smaller rabelo boat operators (6-10 passengers) rather than the large glass-roofed catamarans; the price difference is often only €5-8 per person.
